今回は「for と in と during」です。
日本語訳の丸暗記では、いつまで経っても
英語ができるようにはなりません。
イメージを掴みましょう。

オンライン英英辞書で”for”の定義を見てみよう
■ “for”の定義
・ used to show an amount of time or distance:

■ “in”の定義
・ during part or all of a period of time:
・ needing or using no more time than a particular amount of time:
・ before or at the end of a particular period:

・ If something happens in a particular year, month, or other period of time, it happens during that time.
・ If something happens in a particular situation, it happens while that situation is going on.

■ “during”の定義
・ from the beginning to the end of a particular period:
・ at some time between the beginning and the end of a period:

・ at a point in the course of
・ If something happens during a period of time or an event, it happens continuously, or happens several times between the beginning and end of that period or event.
・ If something develops during a period of time, it develops gradually from the beginning to the end of that period.
・ An event that happens during a period of time happens at some point or moment in that period.

↑とりあえず、他との違いに関係しそうな”during”の定義がコチラ。（本題では（以下略））
どうにも、埒が明かない件について。
はい。定義を見た結果・・・・・
「こりゃ埒が明かないぞ」
といった感じが拭えない気持ちになりました。
こういうのは基本イメージを大切にしつつ、出会ったら覚える。ケースバイケース強めで対応していくパターンをオススメしたい、ということで・・・・
3大（かどうかはどうでもいいけど）for・in・duringの使い分けポイント
を紹介します。（以下、本題です。）
“during”は「継続している間」に注目！
まずは、一番分かりやすいと言える「during」から。
↑こういう「継続している間」みたいなイメージに、注目してみると良いでしょう。
（あ、定規は「タイムライン＝時間の経過」を表しているつもりですw 左から右に。）
■ “during”の定義
・ from the beginning to the end of a particular period:
・ at some time between the beginning and the end of a period:

↑改めて定義も見つつ、一番上の例文を引用すると・・・・・
There were huge advances in aviation technology during the Second World War.

↑これなら「第二次世界大戦”の間（が継続している間）”に、航空技術は大きく進歩した」という話で、duringがピッタリきますよね。
文法的（？）に言うなら、duringの後ろには「時間」ではなく「特定の期間（”夏”の間とか、〇〇時間の”ミーティング”の間とか）」がくることもポイント。
“in”は「箱」のイメージに注目！
↑inのイメージは「（特に箱のような空間の）中」というノリでしたが、その「箱」のイメージを利用して考えてみるなら・・・・・・・
↑こんな感じが、良いんじゃないでしょうか。
■ “in”の定義

↑改めて定義も見つつ、inでポイントとなるのは「〜の間（≒ during）」だけでなく「〜までに」や「〜後」にも使われちゃうことですね。
I started working here in 2009.
↑と言っても、ビビることはありません。（一番上の例文 ≒ during）
Can you finish the job in two weeks?
↑こんな（上から2つ目）
Dinner will be ready in ten minutes.

↑感じで（上から3つ目）
すべて「箱」を利用して、イメージできるかと思います。
そして、結局「started」だの「finish」だの「will be ready」だの、文脈（ワードの組み合わせ）から「あぁ、この定義のパターンね。」と分かるはずです。
「働き始めた」なら「その中の、ある時点で」だし、「仕事を終えられるか？」なら「設定・提示された数字までに」だし、「準備ができるよ」なら「その時間が経つくらいに」だし・・・・・
といった感じで、上手く「箱の中」だけでなく「箱の外」の視点もミックスしてしまうというか「箱の存在によって表現される、時間の概念」を表す、みたいな！
「for the first time in 〜 years（〜年ぶり）」という表現は十分に直感的ですが、現在から過去に向けて「〜yeas」分の箱を置くイメージだって可能ですし。とにかく大切なのは、イメージを基礎として、徹底的に文脈を探ることです。
（故に、inの後ろには「2009」みたいな「特定の期間」と、「two weeks」「ten minutes」みたいな単なる「時間（数字）」の両方がありえますね。）
“for”は「時間の経過」に注目！
↑forのイメージは「志向性」だと表現しましたが、この図解ってもう・・・・・・・・・

■ “for”の定義

↑そして、forの定義では「amount」「duration」「lasts or continues」という「時間が経過する」イメージに注目したいですね。（「amount」は「降り積もった総量」みたいなノリで。）
I’m just going to lie down for an hour or so.

↑こちら（一番上）なら「ちょっと、1時間くらい（時の流れを感じながら）寝っ転がってくるよ」とか・・・・
・The toaster remained on for more than an hour.
・For a few minutes she sat on her bed watching the clock.
・Alison has done the same job for 11 years.

これら（一番下）なら。見事に「remain」「watching」「has done（現在完了＝経験を所持しているノリ）」という「時間の経過」にピッタリなワードと、一緒に使われているのが分かりますね！
forの記事で解説したように「志向性」とは「なにかについての意識」という話ですが、「意識する」からの「時の流れを感じる」というイメージもナチュラルでしょう。
（で、forの後ろには「an hour」「a few minutes」「11 years」のように、単なる「時間（数字）」がきます。）
